Oklahoma is historically a pro-death penalty state. It’s one of 32 states that allows capital punishment.

But protesters of the execution of Charles Warner hope to change that, if not in time for Warner Thursday, then for others on death row.

Around a dozen of them stood outside the Governor’s Mansion leading up to the execution, hoping someone would hear their last minute pleas.

“In Matthew Jesus did not say ‘do not repay evil with evil unless you’re really mad at him’, he said ‘do not repay evil for evil,’ said the Oklahoma Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty leader Rev. Adam Leathers.

Around 5:30 p.m., the group gets a little hope at news of a Supreme Court delay.

“I’m excited that some people are taking a look at this, that it’s not just a small group here who has a problem with with that, the whole country is looking at the ethics of this,” Leathers said.
