KOCO Staff Report – Nov. 17, 2022
MCALESTER, OK – The state of Oklahoma has executed death row inmate Richard Fairchild at the state penitentiary in McAlester.
He was pronounced dead at 10:24 a.m. Thursday by lethal injection.
Fairchild had been on death row since 1993 for killing his girlfriend’s 3-year-old son, Adam Broomhall.
In October, the Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board voted against recommending clemency for Fairchild. Broomhall’s family told the board that they just wanted to heal and asked to allow them to do that.
Fairchild’s attorney claimed he suffered from mental illness and potential brain damage because he was raised in an abusive household with substance abuse.
Supporters said they saw Fairchild getting worse and deteriorating. They also said he told them that he woke up every morning, said a prayer for Broomhall and wished he hadn’t been an alcoholic.
Thursday was Fairchild’s 63rd birthday. Authorities said his last meal was two Quarter Pounders with cheese, a large fries, a large Coca-Cola, a pumpkin pie and a pint of chocolate ice cream.
Fairchild is the fifth death row inmate Oklahoma has executed this year.
